SUMMARY

Interviews with Public across Great Britain (completed January 2001)
3921 adults were asked to how happy they would be to allow release of their health information in ten vignettes. 200 vignettes were devised with different permutations of health professional, use, content, and level of identification.

Patient survey
A survey will assess differences between patients and general public.

Conjoint analysis (completed March 2001)
A postal questionnaire was sent to 2000 people in Barnsley and North East Derbyshire. Subjects chose between pairs of vignettes which included monetary compensation to assess strength of opinion.

Interviews with people with learning difficulties (completed February 2001)
People with learning difficulties were interviewed about informed consent and confidentiality.

Interviews with young people and their parents
20 young patients (aged of 14 -18 years) and their parents will be asked about rights to confidentiality and consent for 14-18 year olds

Focus groups with patients
Patients will be asked their opinions on storage and use of health information, and various approaches to informing patients about electronic health records and use of data.

Randomised controlled trial
Various options for presenting information about the electronic health record and obtaining informed consent will be evaluated with a sample of 450 patients.
